Representations of a person
Selfies
A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or phone, which may be held in the hand or supported by a selfie stick. Selfies are often shared on social media, via social networking services such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. the first ever selfie was taken in late October 1839. the person who did this was Robert Cornelius who was an American pioneer in photography. the process was very slow and because of this Cornelius was able to uncover the lens and get into the shot for a minute or longer before putting the lens cap back on. this resulted in the first selfie in the world to be created.

Ilse Bing
Ilse Bing looked in to many different photography styles such as surrealism, photojournalism and movement. she was born in 1899 in Frankfurt Germany. She then moved to Paris and lived there until 1941, but in world war II she moved to New York with her husband. she studied the history of art and gained a doctorate on the neo-classical German architect Friedrich Gilly. She began to teach herself photography in 1928 when she bought a voigtlander camera. Ilse brought different supply's to capture fast-moving events. because of her new photography skills she could earn an extra living as a photojournalist for a German illustrated magazine supplement, Das Illustriete Blatt.
I used Bing's work as inspiration when taking my own mirror selfies, I thought about her composition not just being the focus on the mirror but showing the surroundings as well. Furthermore I thought of how I would make the mirror selfies more interesting so I went round finding different objects that shows reflections and took photos in them. This is things like car windows, a phone camera and actual mirrors.

Vivian Maier
Vivian Maiers images was not discovered till 2007 when John Maloof came across the photos she took and shared them with the world a while later, however it took people years to figure out who the person was. She was born on the first of February 1926 in New York and died in April 20th 2009. She specialised in street photography and would take photos of crowds normally and through shop windows to get reflections. Vivian did not want to be a famous photographer in her time and thought her art was a private expression, she told a friend 'if she had not kept her images secret, people would have stolen or misused them'. Her first photos were taken in the early 1940s in France. I like her photos because it catches people in the moment without posing for the camera I believe this adds interest to the photographs.

In this series of photos vivian took self portraits of her shadow in different locations often positioning herself so there was an object covered by a shadow to make the picture more interesting.
For my set of photos I took inspiration from this thinking about the positioning of the shadows and how I can make it more Interesting, to do this I used acrylic sheets over a flash to add different colours to the photos making it a more intriguing photograph to look at.

To do this I went in front of widows and outside to take photos of the subject. As well as this I tried to take some silhouette photographs.

Artificial lighting
To take photos showing and working with artificial lighting I went into the dark rom so the subjects face was lit up from the red lights. This meant the photos were darker and more interesting as it created a cool effect.

Studio light set up
for this set up there was three different lights set at different positions to light up different areas of the subjects face. the main light is to the right of the subject this light is quite intense and bright. using only this light creats a lot of shadows on the subjects side of the face due to the light only coming from one direction. the fill light is a lot less bright and isnt there to match or overpower the main light only to light in some shadows. the hair light is placed abouve the subject |

Lewis Khan
Lewis Khan is a photographic artist born and raised in London, working with stills and motion. From an early age, Khan was drawn to the tactile and immediate nature of photography, using the camera as a means to engage with the world around him. His portrait based practice is a study of emotion, relationships and belonging. With a keen eye for observation and a personal interest in community as a driving force in his work, Khan has produced an impressive portfolio of imagery that both acts as social commentary, and immerses him physically in the places, groups, and relationships pictured in his photographs. Khan cites his first foray in to moving image ‘Georgetown’ as a formative project that would go on to influence his approach to stills. The film is informed by six years of impromptu and informal meetings with local resident George, with Khan revisiting the subject over an extended period of time; an approach that he says has given his subsequent projects greater depth. The film was exhibited widely (most notably at The Photographer’s Gallery), and awarded first prize at Shuffle Film Festival by director Danny Boyle.

For my final development i wanted to further develop Valerie Kabis however I wanted to include Ben Watts big up portrait project, to do this I created a collage. I did this by firstly taking a new set of photos trying to improve anything from the last set such as focus and composition. I also decided that I preferred the photos with less movement so focused more on those. Once I had these images I printed some off making sure to alternate the sizes of the images to create variation. I took scraps from magazines of things like text and images to add into the collage. once i experimented with different placements only sticking stuff in if I think its looks good. I think that doing a collage as my final piece engages the viewers more as there is more going on for them to look at and adds interest to the piece.
