The photos taken for this task are inspired by Slava Semeniuta. Semeniuta is a photographer that was born in Siberia, she now lives in Russia and loves anything that looks cosmic. She said 'I like to think that in the cosmos there are many planets where the whole world is fluorescent, mountains, trees, clouds, seas.' This is why she likes to draw and photograph lots of things with bright colours and things that stand out more. She looked at reflections of neon lights or street signs in puddles on the street. So that I was inspired this shoot I tried to recreate this idea in class with lights and a big bag. The photos she took give a really interesting effect to the image and I really like this idea of reflection.
Some of Semeniuta's photos:
My Photos:
In this task I had to use torches and coloured acrylic sheets to create different lights cast onto a black bin bag with water. This created some reflections that create a very pleasing image. The idea of the colourful light and the contrast of the black background creates a very interesting image to look at.

To edit these photos I adjusted different aspects of the photos such as contrast, levels, saturation and more. I wanted to keep the editing simple and just bring out the colours more so they stand out. I finished by cropping the image and brought out the highlights on the image.
WWW. I got some good light reflection in the tray which gave off a cool effect and linked back to the photographer. I think that I had good focus in these images and used the right ISO to get the desired effect.
EBI. I think to make these images better I could work by using a bigger range of compositions to get different angles in the images. As well as this I could experiment more with multiple colours being reflected rather than just one, this is because I believe this makes the image have more depth and it becomes more appealing to the people viewing the photographers.

For this set of photos I decided to look at reflect emotions we may not always share. I thought that this would be effective as this would show people's inside emotions and thoughts. So to do this I took photos of people showing different emotions so I could edit in words to show what they could be thinking in their mind. This reflects the idea that in society everyone is hiding their true emotions and not showing what is actually going on in their heads. as well as this I wanted to reflect the idea how societal pressure and the pressure of living up to steryotypesand standards can control people's thoughts and consume them thinking whether they live up to these.
Mood board for these photographs:
My Photos:
For this set of photos I got the subject to sit in front of the camera making different faces that show different emotions for example happy, sad angry and more. This was so I could then edit the photos like my inspiration showing what they are thinking.

Editing Process:
To edit these photos I was trying to create edits similar to my mood-board. Firstly I wanted a more interesting background rather than just a colour, so I wrote lots of stereotypes of 'how women should be' and put it against a background to make it look like a page from a book. this background reflects the thoughts coming out of her head, these thoughts are linked to stereotypes women face and now they are often told what they have to be like. After the background was finished I copied over the subject after adjusting the brightness, contrast saturation and more. This means that she stands out a lot more and doesn't look too dark against the light background. Next I started writing different thoughts in different fonts and put them against a white background. I kept doing this until the band at the bottoms saying 'ALL IN YOUR HEAD' was filled up as well as this at the end to make the more important words stand out I changed them to red so the viewers eyes would be drawn towards these words.
Annotation
WWW. I think that the edits turned out really good. I also think I used good composition and focus.
EBI. These photos had a better ISO level as many of the photos are slightly under exposed, this meant that there were some photos I couldn't use for edits are they were too dark.

I found quite a lot of inspiration for a starting point on reflections on pinterest and created a pinterest board with these.
For this set I look at pinterest to find inspiration to gain a starting point for my reflection developments. I used lipstick to write on the mirror creating an aesthetically pleasing setting for the images. The lipstick relates too many representations of being 'girly' and the subject doing makeup In these images reflects that idea. the idea that i wanted to show through the images is the thought that women 'should' wear makeup and society ad the beauty standards often put pressure of women to look a certain way and always have their makeup done and nice hair. I thought I would show this idea through the lipstick writing on the mirror and the subject putting o makeup in these photos.
Here are some of my inspiration pictures from my pinterest board:
My Photos:
For this set of photos I got my subject to pose through a mirror with writing on it doing makeup just like in my inspiration photos. I experienced slightly with different compositions such as more zoomed in getting the subject in both mirrors and trying to get her eye or a fragment of her face inside of the o's on the mirror.

To edit these photos I just adjusted the brightness saturation and more, making sure the photo didn't end up looking over or under exposed. As well as this for one of the edits I changed it into black and white to create a varied set of edits.
WWW. I think I took some good photos that reflect the idea I wanted to. I think that the focus was really good and the subject stands out very well.
EBI. If in editing I created more depth by brightening the high points of the image.
What Next:
For the next set of photos I would like to develop the ideas slightly however I think I should find a photographer liked to reflections that I like who takes similar photos but gives of a different effect such as using smaller mirrors or more.

Development two.
For this set of photos I looked into and drew inspiration for the photographer Jack Davison. Jack Davison is a photographer who was born in 1990 and grew up in rural Essex. He is known as a documentary photographer and his work mixes a lot of harsh contrast with cinematic realism. In these examples he creates a fragmented face using different types of mirrors. This creates a mysterious feel to the image through three ideas of the viewer not being to see the whole face. As well as this the images being in black and white add to the mystery and creates more of a creepy atmosphere.
Some of Davison's photos:
My Photos:
For this development I decided to use smaller objects to reflect less of the face. I used may circular objects as I felt it created a more interesting look to the photograph. This idea of only parts of the face being reflected is effected as it doesn't show the entire face which creates a cool effect. I tried using different aspects I my photos for example trying to reflect the face in different objects such as mirrors of different shapes and sizes, with different edges to make it more interesting or using cd discs to show the reflection.

For these edits I just cropped some slightly so the focus was more on the main part of the photo. As well as this I adjusted the brightness, levels, saturation and more. As well as this I turned one of the images into black and white and further adjusted it to create a more interesting photo.
WWW. I think I took some interesting images using good focus and composition. The use of different objects to reflect in makes the photo more interesting to look at as it gives variation.
EBI. I think to improve these images I could create more depth to these images and maybe try some photos involving the subject both in and out of the mirror in a single photo as well as this I think I could improve the lighting by using a higher ISO as many of the photos are slightly underexposed.

I think for my next development I would like to carry on looking at reflections in mirrors however I think I would like to lean into something with a more interesting editing process. As well as this I think that I could look more into something with more of a message behind it.

For This development I took inspiration from the photographer Tom Hussey. He was born in Massachusetts in 1910. He is a lifestyle photographer, he looks at reflections. He does this through having the reflection be a younger or older version of the subject out of the mirror. This gives off the idea that the future/past version of themselves is watching them and how times have changed from their current state.
Some of Hussey's photos's
My Photos:
For this set I tried to use an interesting g effect in editing so the mirrored reflection is different to the outside. This means I could portray different emotions within a photograph. In some of the photos I wanted to show happiness on the outside of the mirror but sadness staring back at them in the reflection to show how things are different on the outside to what might actually be happening.

For these edits I took some of the photos that and the mirror in the same positions and put them together on a new document on photoshop I then cut out the mirror space from the top image to reveal the mirror from the bottom image whilst keeping the rest of the image from the top photograph.
WWW. I think the effects of these photos are very effective, I like the idea behind the photos and I think that the focus I my images was good and the edits were clean meaning the photos are more effective. This also means that whilst taking the photos I managed to keep the camera still meaning that the mirrors were in the same place.
EBI. I think that to improve these photos I could have changed the composition because there is quite a lot of dead space in the center of the photo. To improve this I could have changed the settings or get the subject closer to the mirror. As well as this I think I could have either used a higher ISO to brighten the image or change the lighting as most of these images came out looking slightly underexposed. I could have enhanced the light more photoshop by bringing out the highlights in the photo even more to create more depth.

Editing Process.
For these edits I wanted to make a more interesting effect to do this for one of the edits I tried to make the outside of the mirror a different atmosphere to in the mirror. I did this by keeping the outside of the mirror in colour and choosing a photo where the subject. then to create a contrasting feel in the mirror I changed it into black and white, chose a photo where the subject was screaming, then to emphasis the feel I wanted in the mirror I superimposed the face from this photo over multiple time. This edit was to try and create the idea that on the outside people may look happy and as if they are doing okay but o the inside they are screaming, this mirror shows how they feel on the inside but don't let anyone know.
WWW. I think these set of photos was well developed from the last set of photos I think that the edits well showed the message I wanted. the focus in these images was also good.
EBI. To improve these photos I think I could have used different lightning because some of those photos look slightly yellow. As well as this I think that even though thee composition improved from the last set I think it could be better as there is still quite a bit of dead space in the photograph.

I would like to move on from this idea as I feel like there isn't too much variation to keep going, so I thought I should move on to a different aspect of reflections.

This set of photos are inspired by Ziqian Liu, Liu is a self-portrait photographer based in shanghai. She was born in china 1990 and started photography in 2018. She focuses on self-portraits targeted at perfecting the introspective research and dialogue with one's own subconscious. Her work consists of her through a mirror, she uses different things that are shown both inside and outside the mirror. For example she uses tulips that come out the sides of the mirror, she then photographs herself with her arms connect with three flowers giving of the effect that her arms continue through and past the mirror. This makes the photo look really interesting.
Add Ziqian Liu and introduce your intentions.
My Photos:
For these photos I took inspiration from Ziqian Lui's photos and put up a mirror against a white sheet making sure the backdrop that the mirror reflected was blank, this meant it was a simplistic so the foreground or background wouldn't have anything messy in it. Then I added in different objects like flowers and some fabric to be featured in the photo in different ways just like in Lui's photographs. I also took some photos more similar to her photos by making them self portrait.

For this development I looked into using mirrors to seem as though a gap was created in the subjects body, I thought this was a really cool effect. As well as this I thought that having a mirror could create some interesting reflections and also in some make the person viewing the photo question what it behind it. I got inspiration from the photographer Lin Yung Cheng, Cheng is a taiwanese photographer and art director who uses his ethereal image to break down contemporary femininity. Lin sees his photos as a form of poetry and choices to keep the identity of his sibect a mystery “The absence of facial expressions in the photos is a method to help the audience put their own emotion into the photographs, and let their imagination lead the way’”. His photos focus on the female body using a mirror to create a contorted surreal atmosphere to his photographs. He focuses on many different aspects of femininity from menstruation to childbirth and the dangerous pursuit of beauty.
Some examples of Lin Yung Cheng photos:

For this set of photos I used a circular mirror and stuck it on different parts of the sunects body. I also tried with the subject holding a larger mirror across a section of their body to see what different effects I could create. I put the mirror over the face to create mystery of who's behind it just like the photographer.

Development nine.
For this set of photos I found an image on pinterest that interested me. I wanted to take photos with the idea of the subject being controlled like a marionette. To do this I got the subject to pose as if specific parts of the body were being held up by string for me to edit in the string later. For some of these I then got her to have parts of her body limp to show that she isn't choosing to be like. The idea behind these photos is to show how people are controlled by society and what society wants them to be like. The strings reflect this idea as they are controlling what she is doing. This message behind the photos is quite important as people are constantly being told how they should or shouldn't be like or how they should or shouldn't look.

I created edits of images that I thought would hold the most meaning and make the most interesting images when edited in the way to add strings.
Editing process.
To create this puppet effect in my photos I had to use photoshop. To start I adjusted my image by changing the brightness, levels, saturation and more. This gave me a good base for the edit and made the photo more clear. I then used the line shape tool with a width of 3px, to create a line that was slightly diagonal to add to the effect. This line would as as the string holding up the subjects arm. I had one line start at the top of her arm and go to the top of the screen whereas the second goes from the other side of her wrist to the top of the image, this create the effect of it wrapping around her arm and disappearing where the arm is. Finally once I got these lines in a position I was happy with I used the stamp tool to correct any imperfections in the background of the image to get a smoother finish.

My moodboard for this shoot:
For this set of photos I wanted to think about makeup and how there is so much talk around women and makeup. For example how women are often expected to wear makeup. however it can be very difficult as there are constant double standards for women in society one of these is that if someone wears makeup they are seen as 'fake' although if they don't wear makeup they are considered 'ugly'. I wanted to reflect this idea in this development.
My Photos:
For this development I wanted to look into women in society and how they are always told how to act and what they 'should look like'. I found a lot of inspiration on pinterest and created a board that had ideas of narrative photography. I wanted to look into women in society as there is so many expectations for them in society and women often struggle a lot as they are put down often just for being female. As well as this they are treated so differently to men and can be given extremely different opportunities, pay and respect due to this.

For this development I wanted to develop the idea of how women are presented in society. I wanted to look into lots of different aspects of this. In this set of photos I was looking at representing words and standards and how they can never seem to do the right thing. I took lots of these photos using tape over the subjects mouth this was to symbolize how women are always silence not only by their lack of power due to being female but also in society, society often silences women and because of this women often feel as though they cant speak up about anything.

Introduce the idea behind this development- how does it build on what came before and link to your new theme?
For this development I looked into a different side of women in society. I thought that I could have a set of images to portray SA for women in society, this is a very important topic and sadly many women go through this in their life. However because of society many feel as though they can speak up about it and have to keep it to themselves. This is because a lot of the time people can make the victim feel like its their fault by asking things like: 'what were you wearing' As well as this they rarely get justice of their assaulter going to jail. These and many different factors stop a huge amount of women to speak up about their experiences. I wanted to carry this across in my photographs through the use of hand prints on different parts of the subject. The hand print over the mouth not only represents SA but also how they are forced to stay silent about it. This builds onto my theme of women in society as it is a big part of what so many women have to go through. To find inspiration for this set of photos I looked on pinterest and found these:

Next I was looking at working toward my final pieces I wanted to create different collages that represent women in society and different aspects within this. to prepare for creating these I had to take photos of different subjects with different emotions trying to keep the image simple so I could add it to collages. For these collages I look around and found some inspiration images to help me come up with the message that goes along with my collages.
Inspiration behind my final development:
For this set of photos I took photos of people with different expressions. I used different compositions trying to focus of different parts of the face so I could have varied photos in my collages.
Some of the photos in the above set of photos were slightly blurry so i decided to take another set to get clearer images as i wanted to have good photos for my final piece. I also took photos of boys in this set as I had the idea of how often in society men are superior to women and constantly controlling and telling what and what not to do. I wanted one of my collages to focus on this so I got them to pose as if they were in a superior position.

Did you photograph the process of the final pieces? If not could you break it down and explain what you did?

Experiments:
For the experiments I did a trial collage using photoshop this turned out okay but from this I gained ideas and it made me realised that physical collages would have more of an effect and look better. I also experimented different stitches on the spare photos I transferred onto fabric to get practice for the real thing and also work out which stitches would be better to use.

I then put the cut out hands and positioned them around the subjects face, when I felt like I found a good position I pinned and sewed them into place. After this I cut around the edges of the subject to get rid of the background. I then arranged the rest of the collage creating a background out of ripped up paper talking about women in society. I used this as the background because it links well with the message behind my work and I think it works well with this collage. Once I liked the placement of everything I stuck it down with glue adding words and little images around the edges that tie into the theme. To finish off this collage I cut around the outside to remove excess paper and neatened up the overall look.
